As we enter the new millenium, we suddenly have a new list of words and descriptions, creating confusion among our younger brigade. Brush up on ecobites extensive list and never be stumped by 'what does this word mean' question again...

Organic banana culture is light years more eco-friendly than conventional. Conventional farm workers and banana wranglers are exposed to harmful chemicals. On the plantations, conventional growers fertilize the soil with 1.5 tons per acre of 8:10:8. The numbers refer to chemical nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the fertilizer. Unless organic matter is returned to tropical soils, they soon lose the life in the soil that depends on actively decaying organic matter. Without a rich diversity of soil life, diseases and pests can proliferate.

Organic produce, researchers have shown, generally packs more antioxidants and other healthier and more flavorful phytochemicals than conventional produce. Wow, that's great, but why?

We should extend our concern for the environment to include an effort to preserve as many of the old apple varieties as can be saved.It is more important now than ever before to rescue the past in order to preserve the future. It is the future that is at stake.
