All Australian Lyre Players are invited to a weekend workshop with John Billing, international musician, teacher, composer and performer. A range of activities and workshops will include players of all abilities. This is a unique and wonderful opportunity to share skills, play together and meet other lyre players.

 

A weekend Workshop with John Billing

Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th July 2008

Hosted by Glenaeon Rudolf Steiner School,

Glenroy Avenue, Middle Cove, Sydney, Australia

Who should attend?  

All those who are interested in playing the lyre or in extending your knowledge of teaching methods and your proficiency

The meeting will be especially valuable to teachers wishing to introduce the lyre or who are interested in finding out about the benefits of the students playing the lyre

 Children playing the chromatic lyre are invited to be part of the full workshop programme, or afternoon-only sessions for a more limited timespan, where suitable.

Planned Activities:

·  Playing music specially composed by John Billing,

·  Skill development, listening and simple improvisation

·  Teaching the pentatonic lyre.- For teachers and interested parents wanting to learn

·  A children’s pentatonic group each afternoon

·  A talk on the history of the lyre

A Very Special Evening Concert

A 7pm Saturday evening concert: with contributions from individuals and groups, followed by a solo performance from John on his new Concert Lyre.  The concert will be open to the public.

Stringing Workshop

On Monday 7th June, Murray Wright, lyre maker and player, will hold a separate morning workshop on stringing. Learn hands-on how to replace strings.

Instruments

Bring your own lyre. A small number of lyres available to hire during the workshop, if you need one please let us know beforehand.

John Billing

John Billing is a professional musician and one of the leading lights in the lyre internationally. Performer, recording musician, composer, and teacher, he gives lyre concerts and workshops throughout Europe, America, Australia and Japan. His wide experience enables him bring people of all abilities to enjoy and develop their musical skills

Coral Paterson

Coral Paterson has been a teacher at Glenaeon for many years.  Coral’s extensive music background came to her assistance when she first started teaching the lyre to Glenaeon students.  Since then she has developed the lyre program at Glenaeon to the point where every year 2 child learns the lyre and many continue into their high school years.  Coral has also started an adult lyre group which performs at many festivals.

Dorothy and Murray Wright

Murray and Dorothy Wright have played the Lyre since 1983 and have performed in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Murray composes for lyre, and has been making chromatic lyres since 1995. His lyres are now sought after by some of the world's finest players. John Billing will be playing the new Teardrop Concert Lyre.

We would love to encourage Lyre player to attend from around Australia. 

There will be a range of accommodation available from billeting and youth hostels to hotels that are close to the school.
