Designer Chang Ting Jen has recognized this problem and has come up with his unique method of making inner city transport easy, mobile and will cut green house gases at the same time. His entry in the International Bicycle Design Competition is tagged Backpack Bicycle, and it is easy to see just why.
With public transport stressing under the increased demand of the commuter, the bike is becoming inconvenient or downright superfluous. The need for a practicable folding go anywhere bike is great and will be in big demand. Jen's design is an out of the square look at foldable bicycles., this concept wants to make carrying around of bikes so convenient, that everyone will want one. Jen’s concept is a three-in-one concept - ‘backpack, a bicycle and a handcart.’ The Backpack Bicycle rides as a traditional pedalling bike, but as soon as user is done biking, it can be folded up into a backpack measuring just 60cm in length. Riders do not need to worry about lugging this beauty around as it weighs only 5.5 kg, minimizing weight using plastics in the main frame instead of metals.
Features include a head light, a brake light and turn signals. Jen invisages the target market for the Backpack Bicycle are workers and travellers wanting the freedom of pedalling to work and about for free...not a bad idea with soaring oil prices and the Go Green mindset gripping the world. Ecobites hopes this concept becomes reality. We might even purchase one for our staff. |
