Remove nail polish safely: avoid the troubling side effects of using nail polish remover with the following suggestions. NAIL POLISH REMOVER SMELLS TOXIC because it can be--if you don't take precautions...

Natural Health

NAIL POLISH REMOVER SMELLS TOXIC because it can be--if you don't take precautions. Breathing too many fumes from acetone (a common solvent in. removers) can cause headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, and vomiting, according to reports from the cut Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. And acetone can irritate your skin and dry your cuticles.

Acetone-free polish removers contain safer fruit-derived solvents like ethyl acetate and methyl pentane. But those can also irritate your eyes, nose, and throat. And because they don't work as quickly as acetone-based removers, you use more and prolong your exposure, says Janice Cox, a Medford, Ore.-based beauty expert and author of Natural Beauty at Home (Owl Books, 1999).

Follow these tips for all types of remover, Cox says. Ventilate the room to reduce fumes; use just enough to wipe the colour from your nails; dab jojoba oil on your cuticles after removing polish; and wait a few days before applying a fresh coat.

Choose nail polish removers that are Paraben-free, GMO free, Non-Toxic, biodegradable, No petroleum ingredients, Non-flammable and not tested on animals.
