The term “green wedding” refers to weddings that are more eco-friendly and eco-conscious. These weddings make less of an impact on the environment and aren’t in excess of things that aren’t necessary. Eco-friendly weddings used to conjure up images of “flower power”, and hippies but the wedding industry has ebbed and flowed into a sleek and stylish way to leave a smaller footprint on the Earth while still having a glorious wedding.

Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you." - Frank Lloyd Wright.

When did we let business take over our most precious moments?

Eco Celebrations – Weddings are community celebrations of survival through family and clan.

holding_handsWith today’s de-emphasis on marriage, and over-emphasis on glitz, we miss the beauty of the intimate wedding that is a symbol of our commitment to family and generational flow. But having an ‘eco’ wedding can bring back that intimate communal foundation to your married life. Or even as a second “wedding”, you can step forward into a more real and heartfelt phase of your life together.

By symbolizing what is most important to you…and not cluttering the time with unimportant symbols, you communicate your inner beauty with those who love and nurture you as a family unit.

Our actions speak louder than words in community celebrations…and your special day speaks volumes about who you are and what you stand for.

For more and more couples, getting married provides a natural time to vow to treat the planet, as well as one's spouse, with respect and love. A wedding is a time of hope for newlyweds, why shouldn't it be that for the environment, too?.

Years from now, when your children look at your wedding pictures, they’ll learn an important life lesson: as the Great Law of the Iroquois Federation eloquently states, “In our every deliberation, we must consider the impact on the next of seven generations”

Of course, it would be easy enough to eliminate the impact on our environment by eliminating parties, but that would prevent us from sharing our happiness with the people we love best. And that's certainly not the point.

No, it's to celebrate, joyfully, without being unnecessarily wasteful. There are, we have discovered, many ways to do that. Here are some that apply not just for a wedding but to any kind of celebration.

Encourage carpooling or public transport to your celebration. Avoid paper products and glassware -- borrow from neighbours or rent from a caterer if low on your stock, or puchase from an op-shop and give back after the celebration.

Beeswax candles, CFL lightbulbs and organic-certified flowers will add ambiance without the impact. If you have to use something disposable be sure it is recyclable -- no styrofoam, foil or plastic.

Use local or organic wines that don't use harmful chemicals during farming. Buy organic or local food too -- fresher taste and less impact on the environment.

Consider finger foods -- fun and cutlery free. Set up clearly marked recycle bins so your guests can do the sorting. Clean up will be a snap with biodegradable cleaning supplies.
