TOPIC: Japan stalls movies

23 Mar 2011 06:38 Japan stalls movies #6832

Moviefone reported that Guillermo Del Toro‘s movie Pacific Rim was facing rewrites in response to a planned scene where giant monsters wreaked havoc on Japan. And now Coming Attractions is claiming to have insider information that James Cameron’s Avatar 2 is in jeopardy.

Cameron has been in the process of building a submersible to take him to the bottom of the Mariana Trench to study lifeforms in the ocean as inspiration for potential new creatures for the Avatar sequel. Apparently the submersible is already halfway built, and Cameron had planned to dive the 36,000 feet upon completion. But with the possibility of aftershocks in the region for years, the chance of finding an insurer to provide liability insurance for the exploration is slim if at all… meaning no expedition.

This setback is obviously nothing compared with the devastation Japan is facing. And considering that Cameron spent over a decade creating the first Avatar it’s not impossible to think that the filmmaker might wait until the aftershocks die down to continue with his expedition.
