Are you be eaten out of houes and home by plagues of locusts and grasshoppers? As a normal safeguard, try to attract birds to your garden. They'll eat 'em. Try the following safe approaches ....
Praying mantids are grasshopper predators and can be collected from swampy areas and introduced into the garden. Some sprays that are aimed at killing grasshoppers will also kill any beneficial insects in the area treated. Homemade sprays made from mashed-up tomato leaves and hot peppers are credited as hopper killers, and will also deal with aphis and flies. Chickens and other poultry find them juicy also. One method is to move a portable coop or chicken tractor from place to place in the garden, which will benefit from their manure. Stinking Roger It is the African marigold (Tagetes) which helps in keeping nematodes under control. Stinking roger (Tagetes minuta) planted in the garden. However, it is the English marigold (calendula officinalis) whose flower petals can be used in salads, soups, stews - it also can be made into an ointment, especially good for preventing scar tissue.
