Psychotherapy is a form of treatment to help patients with mental and emotional disorders. Some types of therapy have been proven to be effective whereas a lot of new age therapies tend to be little more than a few vague studies and theories put together to create a so-called therapy.

These therapies are not concerned about the truth rather than techniques they use to make the patient see their way of thinking. It seems with these therapies that the patient does not feel better after certain treatments and the therapist can wash their hands clean as they have ‘tried their best’.

Some therapists believe that trauma can come from a painful experience a patient had as a child such as a violent attack or being sexually abused as a child. It is not only the reason for most of the problems patients have as an adult, but also how adults see their lives and plan them out accordingly. It is not a major concern that the patient sometimes cannot remember the traumatic events of the past, as it is the therapist’s job to try and find out. Sometimes the therapists themselves have been abused in some way as a child and cannot remember either. This is a little unbelievable as the therapists would try and insert his or her memories into the patient to try and remember what went on for them.

Another common belief is that the patient must try and find out the problem for him or herself simply using the therapist as an aid to help them find out what is the matter with them. The social setting for the patient is irrelevant but having trust in the therapist is crucial.

There are many ways that the therapist can gain the patient’s trust and some of them are not wholly good. Sometimes family members are used for reasons of the patient’s trauma even though it may be a personal problem i.e. nothing to do with a family member. In this fashion, the therapist makes sure that no family members are involved thus making him or her the only person the patient can trust.

Such therapies have to be made aware of so as to not let patients fall into such traps. Some therapies can be beneficial but they are few and far between and nothing is guaranteed. Just because it worked for someone does not mean it will work for someone else.
