During ancient times, tribes would look around to find things in their immediate location to please the gods. These things included herbs, animals and gemstones as well. Gemstones such as Amber, Jet and Garnets were used as jewellery and flint was used to create different types of spearheads.
During the time of the Atlantis Empire, crystals were used for healing purposes and also to store information, supplies, energy and even radio waves. Although Atlantis does not exist anymore, it is clear that crystals were used quite widely in their civilization. The Ancient Greeks and Romans also used gemstones as part of their healing recoveries. For many, many years, Babylonia used gemstones and cut and polished them in beautiful and elegant ways. The Egyptians were commonly associated with emeralds too. Many of the stones that were found in pyramids were brightly colored gemstones. Stones such as Malachite, Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Amazonite and Azurite were often found in pyramid sites. Bodies would be decorated with different precious stones to make them look splendid.
In places like India, gemstones were used in relation to the different castes. The Brahmans used rubies to signify the highest of the castes. The moonstone was also very important to Indians. It signified fertility and love. Jade was commonly used in China being the symbol of Buddha and Confucius the philosopher, said it was the symbol of wisdom, beauty and justice.
North American natives use turquoise. In such a culture, this colored stone is used as an amulet and talisman. They also have in the past used other gemstones such as Jet and Abalone Shell for healing purposes. In Central and South America, the Aztecs, Mayans and Toltecs also used Turquoise quite commonly. It was used as a sign of protection and is still used for that purpose today. The Incas decorated their temples and palaces with many beautiful gemstones such as Emeralds, Rubies and Topaz. It was very unfortunate when the Spaniards arrived and stole many of the gemstones for their own pleasure. Only some of the Inca treasures remain but the whereabouts is unknown.
Gemstone therapy went into a decline after these ancient times as science gained more popularity. Not much was known about this type of therapy until recently with the rebirth of interest in alternative therapies as a whole. It seems that many more people are interested in gemstone therapy nowadays to begin to take a more natural approach to healing. This could be because they feel that conventional medicine uses too many artificial and potentially harmful chemicals whereas alternative therapies tend to be more natural. It could also be because patients have exhausted all conventional approaches and are looking into alternative medicine because this is their only option.
Whatever the case may be, it is important to remember that gemstone therapy has had very little scientific evidence to suggest that it can be used for healing purposes and is beneficial to humans. For this reason is it known as an alternative therapy whereby it should not be used as a replacement therapy for conventional methods.
