Craniosacral therapy is a form of alternative treatment that osteopaths and therapists use to help heal and relieve problems with the central nervous system. They do this by subtle movements of the spine and other bones and joints.

Guy wires act as holders for the movement of cranial bones and it is these wires that need to be adjusted. William Sutherland originated this therapy and in the 1950s opened up a center for cranial therapy. Many other philosophers supported this idea of therapy and went on to further Sutherland’s work.

Therapists work more with the emotional and psychological aspects of the patient rather than concentrate on the medial theory behind problems of patients. Many craniosacral research centers were founded over the following years in places such as the UK, Australia, and the USA. Procedures and treatments were standardized legally.

The Primary Repertory System is the heart of craniosacral treatments. Other factors include motility of the nervous system, movements of bones and increases of cerebrospinal fluid.

Cranial bone movement can be limited in a number of ways and it is this that is taken into account when dealing with craniosacral therapy. The bones are manipulated into movement thus stimulating the central nervous system.

Craniosacral therapy supposedly is very beneficial in children suffering problems and there seem to be few side effects. One can be certified in training to be a craniosacral therapist and it generally takes for years to complete. Accreditation and training exist in places like the UK and USA where one can undertake a course.

Skepticism this type of treatment believes that there is no proof that cranial movement can be beneficial to the central nervous system and say that it is insufficient to support theories. Scientific research shows that the cranial bones lock together when growing up and therefore making it impossible for these bones to move. Nevertheless, there have been cases of patients reaping the benefits of cranial therapy.

It is important to remember that not all cases are successful and this is considered an alternative treatment due to little or no scientific research. Medical knowledge states no benefits of craniosacral therapy and it is a decision to be taken by the patient after careful research and advice taken from a doctor or physician.

The Craniosacral Therapy Educational Trust has been training practitioners in Craniosacral Therapy since 1989 and is established as a school of excellence offering in-depth courses in a clear and accessible way.
