fingers-globe-273x168.jpgEnvironmental Days to mark on your community and school calendars. There are endless opportunities to get out and enjoy the outdoors, get involved in your local and natural community, and become self-motivated to make a difference in the health and sustainability of our environment.

Making real and heartfelt connections to nature is crucial for our survival into the next millennium.

It is especially important in this age of virtual reality when so many people - children included   - have become estranged from the natural environment. Focus on becoming a "Green" family working to instil eco-friendly activities into everyday activities.

The Seasons are different when you travel around our world. In the southern hemisphere it is reversed from the situations on the northern hemisphere.

Since the early days of the United Nations system, the UN has established a set of days (as well as weeks, years and decades) to help focus the world on the issues in which the UN has an interest and commitment.

Earth Sciences for Society - an International Year of Planet Earth

The International Year of Planet Earth is partly supported by voluntary donations from companies, organisations, and governments. However, we believe it is vital that individual citizens should feel that their personal contribution can make a real difference to the well-being of our planet.

1 New Years Holiday

On New Year's, people look forward and back, as did the two-headed Roman god Janus, who lent his name to the first month of the year. It's a time for resolutions a custom that goes back several millennia to the Babylonians, whose most popular one reportedly was to return borrowed farm implements.

Nowadays, we're more likely to resolve to become better, eat healthier, skinnier, more fit, more patient, and smoke-free. The most common New Year's resolutions are related to eating healthier, exercising more, and losing weight.

Another great New Year's resolution is to take better care of the environment. After all, keeping the earth healthy makes it easier to keep ourselves healthy! You may find your home will become a happier, more grooving place as you strive to make it greener. Less clutter, less waste, more of the good things of life.

5 National Bird Day

National Bird Day is not only a good day to take time to appreciate the native wild birds flying free outside our windows, it is also a perfect time to reflect on how we treat the native birds of other countries. While we have enacted laws to protect our native birds — such as blue jays, cardinals, and crows — from commercial exploitation, we fail to recognize the inconsistency in allowing the pet industry to exploit the birds of other countries.

2 World Wetlands Day

2 February each year is World Wetlands Day. It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general and the Ramsar Convention in particular.

2 Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2 in the United States and Canada on which folklore tells if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If on the other hand, it is sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks. The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog. The holiday also bears some similarities to the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas. It also bears similarities to the Pagan festival of Imbolc, the seasonal turning point of the Celtic year, which is celebrated on February 1 and also involves weather prognostication.

hand_holding_plant_x-small.jpg24 Arbor Day, US

Arbor Day  (a day to celebrate trees ) is a nationally-celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. It all began in Nebraska in 1872. A special day was set aside for planting trees. This tree planting idea caught on and now we celebrate Arbor Day every year.
All over the world, people are planting trees in their yards and in their communities, caring for them, and learning about their value. Here in the United States, we call this tree planting festival Arbor Day. In other lands, you may hear it called Arbor Week, Tree Holiday, or Tree Festival. In Japan, it is called Greening Week. In Israel it is called the New Year's Day of the Trees. Korea actually has a Tree-Loving Week. Iceland has a Student's Afforestation Day. People in India celebrate a National Festival of Tree Planting. Whatever people call this special time of year, they are sharing the news that trees are important to us all, wherever we live around the world.

Join millions of other people and take part in Arbor Day. Celebrate Arbor Day and plant a tree!

Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April.
National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, but many states observe Arbor Day on different dates according to their best tree-planting times.

The Day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to learn to “live together” better.

23 World Turtle Day   May is a busy month for turtles. Many have recently emerged from winter hibernation and are beginning their search for mates and nesting areas. For this reason, May 23 was designated World Turtle Day.

Turtles not only fascinate each passing generation of children, who find endless wonders under those hard shells, but they also continue to serve as a timeless role model in children's literature: the slow and steady turtle, whose patient progress always wins out against his fast but feckless competitor. Yet the turtles' lofty status hasn't prevented humans from abusing the creature. In fact, all land, freshwater, and sea turtles are facing imminent threats to their survival, simply because of human activities. Turtles are the reptile most affected by the pet trade, not to mention the food and traditional medicine industries. Many turtle species also suffer from the effects of pollution as well as from the destructive effects of industrial fishing operations.

5 World Environment Day

World Environment Day, commerated each year on 5th June, is a United Nations programme aimed at promoting worldwide environmental awareness and action. Kick the habit!

The theme chosen by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which coordinates the day on 5 June on behalf of the UN system and the peoples of the world, will be 'Your Planet Needs You-UNite to Combat Climate Change'.

It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new agreement at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

The news that Mexico has been chosen to host World Environment Day (WED) 2009 was announced jointly by President Felipe Calderón and Achim Steiner, UNEP's Executive Director at a press conference in Mexico City.

The decision in part reflects the growing practical and political role of the Latin American country in the fight against climate change, including its growing participation in the carbon markets.

Mexico is also a leading partner in UNEP's Billion Tree Campaign. The country, with the support of its President and people, has spearheaded the pledging and planting of some 25 per cent of the trees under the campaign.

UNEP has now launched a new and more ambitious phase-the Seven Billion Tree Campaign. This aims to see more than one new tree planted for every person alive by the Copenhagen meeting as one empowering symbol of the global publics' desire for action by their political leaders on the greatest challenge for this generation.

2 (Australia) National Tree Day

Tree Day is a series of events where people can plant trees and shrubs that are native to their local area. Every year, the main National Tree Day is on the last Sunday in July and Schools Tree Day is on the last Friday in July. However, people can also organise a local Tree Day on another date better suited to their weather conditions.

Nearly 250,000 volunteers got involved on the day - that's four times the number of people who volunteered at the Sydney Olympics! Together, we all planted over 2 million trees at nearly 3,440 sites around Australia.

You can organise sites in your local park, school, creek, roadside or bush - even your own back garden.

Get your local school involved! Let's show kids how to be part of their community in a very special way by planting trees.

If you don't want to organize a tree planting site, why not organise a barbecue for your local tree planting site instead? Call 1300 88 5000 or visit National Tree Day website  for details of sites in your area.
