chemical-jars-283pxWould you eat hydroponic produce after taking notice of new claims of growth hormones being touted as the holy grail of hydroponic fertilizers. It certainly brings new questions to the debate on ethical food production.

It has been reported that hormones to promote amazing growth in hydroponic crops cost $500,000 USD per gram making gold look cheap by comparison.

A Seattle based international hydroponics nutrients company is conducting innovative hydroponics plant science research with ultra expensive auxins,

gibberellins, cytokinins and other plant growth substances.

According to hydroponics experts Evegeniy Stefanov Yordanov, Michael Straumietis, and Robert Charles Higgins, teams of Advanced Nutrients plant scientists are testing exclusive hormones and other innovative substances that control plant flowering, root growth, and plant health.

Michael Straumietis, Robert C. Higgins and Eugene Stefanov Yordanov are described by colleagues as the world's number one authorities on hydroponics and bigger hydroponics yields.
The trio founded Advanced Nutrients, which manufactures and distributes hydroponics nutrients products in 41 countries worldwide.

Hydroponics healthy to eat?

With the shift in crop production away from synthetic fertilizers to more organic practices, consumers should be made aware of this type of development so they can make a valued judgement on what they are eating.

GM Crops are in the news daily and now with hormone laced hydroponic fruit and vegetables, it brings new meaning to the saying - 'Play safe and eat organic.'

Growth Hormones is a disaster in the making

Hormones to increase growth in crops is like the Muscle Heads pumping growth hormones in to their bodies to get bigger and stronger without considering the long term health implications. Sure it gives them short term gain, but at what risk to their health. I agree with 'GM Food Protestor' - let the pseudo scientists test these lame ideas on themselves and their families for 10 years+ before they potentially wreak havoc on the rest of us.

The world has to take a stand against pseudo scientists coming up with their so called super growth fertilizers without researching the long term health problems associated with this. Sure, it may feed a few extra mouths, but who pays for the costs if this turns out to be a long term disaster. Not the companies, but the taxpayers.

If we are able to grow crops that increase food production while using the same amount of resources, wouldn't that help to solve the food crisis we are currently facing? I think this type of research definitely benefits the countries where people are starving to death because they can't grow their own food on the land because it is so void of nutrients and proper soil. Yes, we here in America can sit and complain about this type of research while we eat our Big Macs, whoppers and god knows what and grow soo fat we can't move while people across the world can't even get one meal per day......
Who would eat hydroponic crops after this news.

I read a new article with this company bragging about their new discovery. You would think commonsense would dictate that they would only promote this to hydroponic growers and not the general public. Consumers are turning off food created by science to more natural alternatives.

Thank you ecobites for bringing this to our attention. I won't be indulging in hydroponics anymore and I am sure the hydroponic producers would be ducking for cover over this article.

This is a bit like microsoft

When are governments going to put in place, systems to make sure this type of development is safe. It is getting a bit like microsoft getting purchasers to test Windows after they have released the product. Except in this case, we will need a lot of bad events before it is banned for good.
Who tests the hormone laced crops

When pseudo-scientists come up with the so called wonderful growth homones, they should be sent home to eat this stuff for 10 years. Only after this period of  extensive testing on their bodies and mind, will we be able to make a judgement call on whether this is a safe practice. Assuming they don't get poisoned by their own discovery and are still alive at the end of the 10 trial.
