I'm a firm believer in allowing children to help out according to their abilities. First we did a little gardening and yes they both did what they could, got filthy diry, had a wonderful time in the fresh country air and eventually needed a sleep. Whilst they were peacefully sleeping I trotted off to our local gardeners market Nirvana Herbs and purchased some little fairies, unicorns, birds, green pebbles, butterflies etc. Once home I hunted in our garage for a box with a lid. Once they had fully awakened and were beginning to get bored I said 'lets make a fairy garden'. They loved the idea so nana, mum and the girls all helped and contributed to making a lovely portable fairy garden they could take home with them. On reflection, we should have painted the box first, (I could have done this before the girls woke up). They both had a great time putting the pebbles on the base of the box, sticking the butterflies where the sky would be, making a little pond with frogs, fairies & unicorns sitting around it. Placing the birds nest (a real aboned one found on our honeysuckle vine), birds on twigs, using gravel pebbles for the eggs in the nest etc.
With supervision and a little imagination we all had a lovely afternoon making something they could take home with them and treasure.
