When we talk about play today, the first thing that comes to mind are toys. Whereas when we would think of play in the 19th century, it would be activity rather than an object. Today’s toys do a great disservice to children, in that they do not promote the activity mentioned by Chudacoff. But neuroscientist Adele Diamond and psychologist Deborah Leong have good news: The best kind of play costs nothing and really only has one main requirement — imagination.
From yesteryear, for the skipping games a large heavy rope was needed and this was usually "borrowed " by some father who worked in the shipyard or some other workplace.They were a valued commodity and hard to come by - washing lines were no substitute. It was tied to a local lampost and the girls would begin their game. Boys could join in provided they took their turn in "turning the rope."
Many people feel that playing competitive games helps children to develop skills needed to survive in a competitive society - aggression, ambition to be best/first and emotional toughness. However, qualities which enable an individual to get along peacefully in society are arguably more important now than ever before.
When we were growing up, children knew intuitively when the season for a certain game had come around. It was true that you couldn't just go out and play marbles when you felt like it, if it wasn't the season. It just wasn't done, besides there wouldn't be anyone to play with because everyone was playing that season's game! Seeing your marble bag at the bottom of the toy box wouldn't excite you if it wasn't the marble season.
