In the past two hundred years, since the advent of modern agricultural and food processing techniques, our diets has progressively gotten farther and farther away from the natural foods which sustained traditional peoples all over the earth for centuries...primarily whole grains, beans, locally grown organic vegetables and fruits, and small quantities of deep sea fish, wild and range-fed animals, and natural condiments. Instead, we eat mostly from colourful boxes and cans. We spray our vegetables and fruits with deadly chemicals, then ship them half-way around the world before we eat them. We keep chickens awake with electric lights, and feed them hormones to get them to lay eggs constantly. It’s been a grand experiment in the wonders of technology...but what a price we’re paying in ours and the Earth’s health! In traditional societies eating a more natural diet, many modern diseases were almost non-existant, including : heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension. Volumes of scientific research are now documenting the clear connection between our modern, devitalized diet, and the rise of these diseases in every westernized country.
Many scientific experiments have now demonstrated that if we simply return to eating more traditional, natural foods, the body often begins to heal itself. As world population swells, food-related issues are becoming more urgent. Many modern farm practises threaten the balance of natural forces throughout the ecosphere. For example, the market for fast-food burgers is leading multi-national corporations to cut down tropical rain forests at an alarming rate, to grow grain for cattle. Rain forests supply a major portion of the oxygen on earth. ½ the life species on the planet live in these forests. Our mutual survival is at risk. Our food choices make a difference. [youtube:http://youtube.com/watch?v=piJv6-IPNs0] Start with what we don’t buy at the market this week. You can pioneer a more simple, globally responsible lifestyle, which conserves natural resources, and helps combat world hunger. One step at a time. Eat local, think global. Easily the most practical step in a new direction is to eat more locally-grown whole foods. Shop around. In health food stores, organic food co-ops, farmers markets. Look for certified organic fruit and vegetables etc. Invest in our mutual future. Eat organic local, and think global, friends. Whenever possible, pick and eat directly fruits from trees, berries and vegetables from the garden. It is possible for everybody to eat, at times, from soil to mouth. Great for our children to grow and eat. Together, we can make a big difference towards creating the new lifestyle we’re all hungry for...ecological balance, economic stability, emotional fulfilment, world health and peace. |
