Gas Conscious Cargo Hauler PDF Print E-mail

cargo-scooter2A new scooter concept is designed around the task of hauling cargo in the most direct way possible – it’s a moped with a hole in it.

It’s been known since the device came into being that mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles are far more space- and fuel-efficient than cars and trucks. They’re also dirt cheap compared to the four-wheeled behemoths we use to get aroud, most of which are a passable year’s salary. So why are they clogging the streets of Asia but not here?

This car runs on Hot Air! PDF Print E-mail

air_carYou've heard of hybrids, electric cars and vehicles that can run on vegetable oil. But of all the contenders in the quest to produce the ultimate fuel-efficient car, this could be the first one to let you say, "fill it up with air."

The compressed air car planned for the U.S. market would be a six-seater, a New York company says.

That's the idea behind the compressed air car, which backers say could achieve a fuel economy of 106 miles per gallon.Plenty of skepticism exists, but with many Americans trying to escape sticker shock at the gas pump, the concept is generating buzz.

Greener Transport PDF Print E-mail
elec_tric_car_fuel_cell_xsmallUnless you're moving under your own steam, getting from A to B will always cause pollution. But researchers are focusing on reducing travel's environmental impact. One technology showing promise is superconductors.

They are already being used on a few magnetic levitation trains, where very cold magnets hover over tracks and can reach speeds of more than 240 MPH / 400 kilometres per hour.

For personal travel, a team at the University of Tasmania has created a hybrid scooter that uses a combination of battery power and ethanol fuel. While the approach is not new, the team has developed a system that can be retro-fitted to existing scooters, dramatically reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Hi Tech Thunderbox? PDF Print E-mail
toilet-earth-flush-xsIs the thunderbox making a great return, albeit in a more hi-tech form. With plans-a-flush (excuse the pun), with a new creation from India, where last night's corncob or Bombe Alaska will be carted out to the organic garden and used as fertilizer.

Sintex Industries, a plastics company in India, has rolled out a small-scale methane digester that can produce enough gas to power a stove, washing machine or generator.

The 264-gallon digester takes in human waste as well as kitchen scraps. As the material composts, the digester routes the resulting methane into a storage tank. For now, the system is available only in India, but DIYers are in a fever all over the web already posting online about their own manure-powered creations.
